Discount Candle Making Supplies
From LoveToKnow Candles
Discount candle making supplies are a big help for people who want to make their own candles while staying within a budget. If you wanted to, you could spend a lot of money of a whole bunch of different molds, exotic kinds of wax and other accouterments. In reality, however, there's not a lot you need to buy in order to start making your own candles.
A Basic Candle Making Kit
If you want to save money on candle making supplies, make a list of what you think you'll really need. If you are just starting out, you may not know what kinds of candles you are going to want to make. If you have a little experience, however, you may know that you love making votive candles but don't have any interest in taper candles.
Look around your house and see what kinds of candles you have purchased. This will give you a good idea of the kind of candles you'll like to make in terms of size and shape. You'll also save money if you make candles that are appropriate for the candle holders you already own.
The most basic supplies you will need include:
- Wax
- Candle molds
- Wicks appropriate for the size of molds you have
- Mold sealer (You can use Sticky Tack or a similar product instead.)
- Dye and/or fragrance in a couple of colors and scents that you like (This is one place where it's easy to go crazy, so only buy what you need.)
- Melting pot or pan to be used exclusively for candle making
- Hot plate (This is not absolutely necessary, but very handy to keep the mess away from your stove.)
If you're just starting out, buy plain old paraffin wax and a couple of basic molds, such as a votive candle mold and a three- or four-inch round pillar mold. You can have plenty of fun just with these two basic shapes.
Buy wick that works with them, a couple of colors of dye and a couple of basic fragrance oils, such as vanilla and another scent you like. If you are planning to give your candles as gifts, you'll want to keep the colors and the scents pretty basic.
Finding Discount Candle Making Supplies
The first place to start in looking for discount candle making supplies is your local crafts superstore. These stores have different items for sale each week. If you're patient, you'll soon find candle making supplies on sale. Additionally, they often put out coupons for a discount on a single item. Use this one when you're needing a 10-pound slab of wax. Buying locally is a great idea for products like this because then you don't have to pay for shipping.
Still, sometimes you need to shop online and you can get a great discount that way. Here are some places to look for inexpensive candle making supplies:
- Discount Candle sells candles as well as candle making supplies at a discount.
- CandleWic is a great place to look when you need a large quantity of something, such as spools of wick or 20 pounds of wax. The company uses wholesale pricing and bulk discounts.
- Lone Star Candle Supply is a good source for all sorts of supplies related to soap and candle making, as well as gel candles.
- Bitter Creek Candle Supply has a wide selection of candle and soap supplies at wholesale prices, with discounts on web-based orders. Check out their closeouts for the best deals.
Don't forget eBay, which is always a good source of new and used crafting supplies. You don't always know what you're going to get when you shop on eBay, but it's usually true that you can get a bargain if you buy when an auction is about to close.
