How to Make Heavily Scented Soy Candles
From LoveToKnow Candles
Scented candles are very popular, and learning how to make heavily scented soy candles can give you a way to make your own scented candles, with fragrances that you can design yourself. Making candles is a fun hobby, or you could even turn it into a business and share your creations with others.
About Scented Soy Candles
Many candle makers enjoy working with soy wax, because it comes in a convenient flake form that's much easier to handle and measure than large blocks of paraffin wax. Soy enthusiasts claim that soy wax burns longer and cleaner, and is more natural than paraffin.
Soy is also easier to clean from candle making equipment than other types of wax. Instead of chipping or scrubbing, the leftover wax can be washed away with hot, soapy water, or safely cleaned in the dishwasher.
Like paraffin or any other type of wax, candles made from soy wax can only handle so much scent before an oily residue will form on the sides and top of the candle. Heavily scented candles are possible without this oily result; just be sure to carefully read the recommendations for the wax, and not add too much more scent than the wax can handle.
How to Make Heavily Scented Soy Candles
The best way to heavily scent your soy candles is to use high quality, concentrated fragrance and essential oils. A small amount of good quality fragrance is always better than larger doses of poorly distilled scent.
For the longest lasting scented candle, container candles are the way to go. Not only is the candle itself enclosed in the container, but you'll also have a lid to place on the top, ensuring that the candle fragrance will not fade when not in use.
Scented Soy Container Candle Instructions
Here's how to make heavily scented soy candles in a container.
What You'll Need
- Clear glass jar, such as a mason or jelly jar, which holds about 16 ounces
- Soy candle wax, about one pound
- Fragrance oil for candles, or essential oil
- Candle dye if desired
- Microwave safe bowl or glass measuring cup
- Spoons for measuring and stirring
- Pre-tabbed candle wicking
- Clothespin
Instructions
- Place the soy wax in the microwave safe bowl or measuring cup. Microwave on medium heat for about five minutes, or until most of the wax has melted. You can stir the heated wax gently to melt the rest of it.
- Dip the tabbed end of the wick into the melted wax and center it on the bottom of the inside of the glass jar. Press lightly to adhere the tab to the glass.
- While the soy wax is still warm and easy to pour, stir in the fragrance. You can generally use up to one ounce of fragrance oil per pound of wax. Also stir in a small amount of candle dye, adding more if necessary to achieve the desired color.
- Slowly and carefully pour the scented and colored wax into the jar, making sure that the top of the wick stays dry. Once the wax is poured, center the wick and hold it in place with a clothespin laid sideways across the mouth of the jar.
- Allow several hours for the candle to cool and set. When ready to light, trim the wick to half an inch from the top of the candle.
