What are Tea Light Candle Lamps?

If you've never seem a tea light lamp before, they're basically lamp-shaped candle holders, complete with shades, that use a tea light candle instead of a lightbulb for illumination.

These lamps usually have some kind of theme such as celestial, horses or Americana. They can be found made of glass, metal or ceramic materials. The lampshades may look like traditional shades or match the style of the lamp itself.

Finding Tea Light Lamps

The tea light candle lamp is a style that has recently become very popular, perhaps because it is a different way to use candles than simple taper candles that can add to the personality of a room.

Because of this increased popularity, tea light candle lamps can often be found at local discount stores, craft stores and general gift shops. They are often stocked in the candle section right alongside more basic candle holders.

You can also sometimes find seasonal candle lamps, which are great for gifts or to use to decorate your own house for the seasons and the holidays.

Buying Candle Lamps Online

If you can't find the kinds of candle lamps you are looking for in your local shops, it's easy to find them online. Here are a few places to look:

  • Yankee Candle sells a variety of tea light holders, including a few lamps. You'll also find tons of accessories and lamps for other sizes of candles here.
  • 100 Candles has some styles of tea light holders that you might not see in other places, including a Japanese-style lamp, frosted-glass lanterns and a torchiere-style lamp.
  • Many pewter lamps and other styles of tea light lamps can be found through the Google Shopping page.

Using Tea Light Lamps

Tea light lamps are a fun addition to just about any room. They look darling on a bedside table or next to a real lamp on your end table in the living room.

The right themed candle lamp can make a nice centerpiece on your dining room or kitchen table. Unlit candle lamps can add to the décor in your kitchen as well.

There are even themes of lamps that your kids will like in their rooms; just don't add a candle if they're not old enough to be trusted with a lighter and burning candle unsupervised.

Tea light lamps can even be used in your office – whether a home office or an office elsewhere – to bring a homey touch without taking up a lot of precious real estate on your desk. (Check work policies before you burn a candle at your desk, but tea lights may be acceptable since they are usually unscented).

Tea Light Lamp Safety

As mentioned earlier, you don’t want to leave these or any other candles where a child can get to them without supervision. Don't leave them somewhere they could easily be knocked over by a person or animal passing by.

Tea lights are very small, but that doesn't mean they're completely safe. You should use the same precautions you would use with any other candle: keeping the wick trimmed, not burning a candle in a room where there are no people, and not letting the candle burn for more than a couple of hours at a time.

Be especially careful with the candle lamps that have lamp shades, as it may be possible to catch them on fire if the candle gets too close to the shade. That's why it's important to only use tea lights in lamps made for tea lights. Even small votive candles may be tall enough to catch the shade on fire.
